What does threetier mean?
"three tier" for the IT generally means the architecture of applications in three layers. These typically are:
Presentation Layer
Manages the presentation of data and is used as user interface
Business Layer
Keeps the Business logic of the application and manages the correct processing of the data
Data Layer
Is normally represented by a database and if necessary additional mechanisms and manages the storage of the data
The clear isolation of the three tiers reduces the complexity of an application and therefor decreases the needed time to develop and makes it easier to maintain. Using defined interfaces between the layers, it is possible to exchange each of the layers. Because of this the application will be future-proof.
